Catching the bus in Yangon, Myanmar

How to catch a bus in Yangon. It might seem strange for a foreigner. Sometimes you get strange looks from the locals. However, travel to the downtown by taxi is going to set me back 4000 kyat from out where I live. The bus is only 300. Considerably cheaper. I usually use the BRT Lite bus system. This is new and the buses are clean and air conned. Next door to the bus stop is a kiosk where you can buy a pre paid card for use on the buses. It will set you back about 2500 kyat, and has 1500 credit on it. These kiosks can also recharge your card. I usually top up 1 or 2 thousand kyats at a time. It is pretty easy.

Below is a picture of one of the bus stops. This one is opposite Myanmar Plaza, which is probably one of the most western shopping centres in Yangon. Just wait here till the bus turns up. The longest I have waited is 15 minutes.

Each bus stop has a map of the bus route. Basically it is a large circular route. Any trip will cost you 300 kyat. You can see the name for the Myanmar Plaza stop here.

The pay system is fairly familiar to most foreigners. Just tap your card and your away when you get on the bus.

Here is what the actual buses look like. Not too shabby.

And inside the bus. A little bit crowded today, but not too bad. I always wear an American hat so people think I am a rude American.
